Down and Out has resurfaced from its long sleep and mistakenly heralded demise, and is now back to get shit together most particularly in the Davao City Hardcore scene. As what this blog’s original architect aspired in his grand design, the new set of moderators will carry on the same ideals and that is to strengthen City of Thornz Hardcore, and make it a prominent hardcore scene not only in the Philippines but also in the four corners of the planet.

What to expect

Since there are new moderators, fans and friends should expect different writing blurbs and styles. Reviews, reports, scenester interviews; and social, political or emotional rants will still be staple and supple nourishment for the inquisitive and progressive of minds. What is to expect as an additional offering on the table are contributors of shapes and sizes, from different scenes within and out Davao City to help in with the literature and the visual delights. We like to take the opportunity to address all of those concerned that Down and Out is no longer a one man show, it now involves the whole scene, and that means YOU!

We want you

We are looking for young (by age or by choice), energetic and passionate people who share their love for Hardcore and Punk music, culture and lifestyle to get involved, regardless of residence. This is your chance to make something out of your everyday and normal 9 to 5 life. Get involved in something vast which surpasses the physical barriers of self and geography that of which is brotherhood, and sisterhood for that matter. Share relevant information and insights about anything that is hardcore, punk, love, anarchy, non-conformity, inspiration and life in general.

How to make shit happen

Leave your e-mail on the message box if you have something to impart the hoards of kids that need inspiration or just want to be a smart ass. One of the moderators should reply to check your article, edit if it need be and soon enough, you can see your contribution posted on this very blog. It’s that fuckin’ simple.

A word of advice, because this is an organic and positive site, the moderators hold the right to scrutinize and decide the fate of hate-mails and post.

We have to put all our hands in to make not only the Davao City but the whole of Mindanao Hardcore scene make a noise in the international arena.

Only The Strong Survive (Hardcore Punk Fest) - A Gig Report

This gig review is awfully late, but as they say, better later than sorry. With some minor glitches and of course the usual monetary hanky-panky, the Only The Strong Survive – Hardcore Punk Fest last March 20, 2010 was an overall success. Scores of bands, from within the city and nearby came in attendance for the much awaited comeback gig after 3 months of COT's momentary hiatus. Yes! City of Thornz Hardcore is here to stay!

The anticipation was suddenly greeted with the usual air of pinoy punctuality – as it is relevant to almost all scenes in the Phil. – it was past 7:00pm and there were no complete bands in sight; only a handful loyal scenesters who made sure that the instruments, particularly the drums, sound near to what it should sound like. As the crowd outside the venue was piling up and after a long time of waiting and waiting for the first lined-up band to show up complete for the gig to start, the organizers were confronted by a problem long believed to have halted existence; there wasn't an on-stage guitar! But this problem was quickly resolved by the dashing and deceptively astute organizers, and after having found the much needed instrument the show finally STARTED!

Disclaimer : The reporter's capacity for storing and retrieving information is not that adept, and sincerely apologizes to those bands whose name he has forgotten, or even fail to mention for that matter. No worries though because, if the names of your bands should come up in his mental plate any time soon, shall be included on the succeeding posts! And the bands appearing on the review might not be in the order as they have appeared on that fine night.

The first band, hmmmm, whose name didn't really register, played covers of notable and singable punk rock tunes which was all that it takes to get their crowd of mohawked and spiked crowd outside to start into a frenzy.

This is were the funky memory starts to take its toll, so the bands appearing from here on, are not necessarily in correct order.

It does not take a genius to guess what Kami Oi's delivery of the night. Even though they were nicely dressed for the occasion, kinda reminds you of your niece's christening day, with their long sleeves and suspenders, they haven't really given justice to the songs they were playing. Carrying a lyric sheet on stage for a cover song does not really appeal to me.

Pains, Logs and Diaries from Kidapawan City played some intense progressive brand of hardcore, with emo-ish guitar blends, fast parts, some beatdowns here and there. What I personally like about this band is that they can craftily add their dub breakdowns after the brash of heavy parts.

Direct from General Santos City is the .50 caliber which delivers heavy pounding metal-hardcore packed with grinding blast beats, beatdowns and slow moving sludge that draw the first blood of mad pit hysteria. If there is a prize for the overall most hardcore outfit of the night, these guys can snatch it without much of an effort.
One of Davao City's prime bands played in your face hardcore, Iron Will, throwing a dash of metal overtones with fast and crazy adrenaline filled fast parts to spew some intense circle pits of the night.

Another of COT's finest to have played for the night is Caitlyn Bailey. It seem a coincidence that their changing drummer has to do with their change of musical style. Regardless, dare I not say Math, but it's it's all math to me. They have refined they brand of progressive style of hardcore to exhaustion throwing in some crust-core parts in the i-got-lost-in-the-count speed.

COT's beatdown kings, Roundhead, played a furious set with what else – no holds barred chugga-chugging. The crowd jostled in for another round of ground and pound slam pit frenzy.

Straight from Polomolok City is Sacrifix. Delivering their angst filled spite of grueling heavy hardcore, reminiscent of early Earth Crisis.

Hmmmm. This band from Panabo City brought in some sick hardcore a-la Blood for Blood. At this time cardiovascular deficiency set in and most were exhausted to their seats enjoying some blatant music away from the pit.

Anxiety to Hysteria played their usual hymns of brutal 90's hardcore but has not really inspired the activity on the pit. This mainly because of starting their set with post-metallish and sluggishly dragging experiment, whose somber energy resonated through-out their set.

Last but not the least is hmmmm, another band whose name I forgot, but good friend, and can be considered fossils of Davao City Hardcore. They played Hatebreed and Earth Crisis inspired spews which didn't turn out too well on the consideration that they may have had more of their alcoholic fix for the night.

No shows for a while huh, Well don’t worry we will set up a show this October. As of now I heard a lot of bands quite busy with the upcoming end of semester but the next show is on the works and definitely would be a blast being that we haven’t had one for a while..

Some good reads that I happen to read already but haven’t had the time to review it, again as I said if you are interested you could always borrow and re print my copies of zines that I featured here. Interest in zines lately here in the local diy community in dc is quite at a low point, unlike before as I could remember we would save our cigarette or recess money for school to pay for “Xerox” copies of zines ,both local and international. And it’s so fucking great, punk rock opened up a lot to me but when i read my first fanzine I was astounded. It opened up a whole new world to me and said this is how I want to write! It was even a local one, but man I remember the cut and paste art and remarkable article and views of everything I love and hated. Honestly straightforward, and brutally truthful. Unlike the books I read in school or magazines that my cousin have which doesn’t really say anything that meant to me. Best abour zines also is its all done for the love of it, totally nonprofit. You even tend to loose more than what you would earn but still the hell with it! Im writing this because I and a friend from the THINKING PERSONS LIBRARY here in Davao, is planning to make a zine convention or gathering or what ever the fuck you call it, just something to promote and reawaken a dying culture in Davao. So stay posted ayt? Again a show on October and a zine convention sometime after that!!

I remember Halloween 3rd issue

Got this from the writer it self Mr. Dane Cortes, and again always a winner. A japans inspired cover along with a lot of japans stuffs like interviews with Jap bands Completed Exposition, Dudman, Dread Eye and a Japan scene report. But as he said is not necessarily called a Japan issue coz it also features interview crux interview, an aussie hardcore punk outfit. AxNxS ,a straight edge thrashcore band is also interviewed along with local heroes Bystorm. And if it’s still not enough, tons of music and zine reviews and a Holland and Malaysia scene report! Extremely a lot in 1 package, and as always with all the IRH issues, its flawless!! Great lay out, great questions and a great effort!! Galling….keep it up!!

ASAWHOLE would be playing a benefit show for the flood victims in luzon, this would be on Friday at 6pm to 9 pm at the Victory Chapel ( nice venue huh) as long as it is for a good cause…….

Be there and support the show or at least the cause, I think there is no entrance fee but donations such as rice, canned foods and noodles would be greatly appreciated.. so I guess that’s it! see you then..ciao

The thought of being alone haunts us except maybe for some, as for me I want to experience it and it was pretty much what I did the time I was gone. The idea of goodbye disturbs me a lot. Mainly because I hate it and attachment is always so hard to break. Now question is how much people would you lose in a life time? I am in a stage of constant departure and all I get is a nod, Not that it’s not enough but don’t we miss the physical communication? Why is it more normal to say good morning in text messages rather than saying it right in front. He he exactly! That’s what I love about Hc shows that I don’t see in the street or at school or at home. In celebration of living I go to shows and organize some, sing in a band, write, travel and breathe. Time for our community to grow, and grow with us! Not to grow out of. Let’s keep this real and intimate. It saddens me to see friends from this community that are so cool that they suddenly have to play in shows that has corporate sponsorship where in they could be all that the status quo wants them to be, how long would it take you to understand that your words are not becoming dependable rather SELLable. Don’t get me wrong friends, there is nothing wrong with making an honest money out of playing shows but its sad to jump to the point were in you play your music to promote products or even names that is owned by people who don’t give a shit about you and your music and what your music has to say for that matter. This corporation has nothing in mind but to earn money and use every little resource they have to turn everything into profit. This is sad to think that generations before us that had been there to create a circle that for ones, never cared about how much money they are going to get. They would rather have a room of people gathered to create a voice that connects every single breathing human there is inside. It’s a chaotic approach to reality but it is REAL! You cannot hide the fact that the glass house of humanity that hides between proper and correct have failed to let us experience our lives first hand. We are the machinery of civilization aiming to prosper the luxurious world of the elite while we forget to play just to buy the cell phone we need to fit in and not get left behind, Classism justified! There is a marathon of technology that we will never win. But still humanity had been dumb and thinking for yourself had become radical and grass rooted. But still we play the game and we should play it right, coz we have a choice. This is not the choice you see between brand A or B but the choice of not choosing between the 2! The choice of living life and choking it with your own fist, not the choice you get in an election were you choose between elite suited jerks to rule you, that’s not a choice. It’s a cheap delusion of choice, role playing to tell you that the system works for you, well its not and it doesn’t and it will never will. In the books of human race we are NOTHING but numbers and statistics! So please let’s enjoy this community while it is still real, speak up and do something!! Live life, write a song, cut a class or simply cover your ears. Its real and intimate, think for your own and love life, coz if you don’t have a life to live, well you aint got love to give.
Keep hardcore away from greedy corporate business man and wanna be actors and keep it on the streets where it belongs!!
You don’t get it and buy it, you live it…….

MAHIRAP KA LANG BA? MAHIRAP LANG DIN AKO...( an old article)

judt something to "update".. update this tomorrow!!!

Just last month i visited MAnila. Pretty excited to see long time friends, buy some shit that we dont have here in Mindanao like some lokal UG cds some cheap stuffs
and sweet papers. The last time I went there was 2 years ago. We went there through hitch hiking (yeah I know. its so punk rock!) That 3 day journey riding at least 20 different cargo trucks, 3 days of striking heat and cold nights
.so pretty much prepared to get to MANILA. But this December we rode a plane. So the changes were too soon. Like an hour and 45 min kind of soon. As I walk around Quiapo and other rural places I had a complete apparition of what poverty is. Don’t get me wrong, we are not rich but what I saw in Manila is a disturbing and sad portrait of a rotten society. And I know that sooner or later other places in my home town would also be reminiscent of that. And it scared the shit out of me.....
Visions like this only hardened my question about poverty; living in a 3rd world country must have at least shaken your senses about the question of where we are actually headed. Marketed society of unfulfilled dreams is usual scenery. Best export products of people had left us dumbfounded because the idea and eagerness to earn. Earning not to make our lives easier but rather, just to have enough money to buy the rice that we need for the day. Its surely is a long road out to prosperity.

Roughly 4.7 million Filipino families, comprising about 41% of the population, currently have annual incomes below the poverty line. That cut point is set at something around a dollar per person per day. Smaller than uncle sams nephews school allowance in 3rd grade... This makes us more valid to work for anything. Whether it’s hard or degrading, we oddly forget it. Which is pretty devastating coz we got the man power, we got the resources and we got the needs but we aint got the economic wealth.
There is tremendous geographic variation, ranging from 8% of the population in Metro Manila to 60% in some of the Muslim areas of Mindanao, from 11.6% in the province of Cavite to 79.5% in the province of Romblon.
We're not just talking about absolute poverty here; we're talking about relative poverty - and structural inequality. The bottom 40% of families account for only 13.7% of total family income, while the top 10% account for 35.5%. In economic lingo, the country has a Gini coefficient of 0.4507, which represents a high level of inequality indeed.
When discussing poverty in developing countries, it is essential to avoid the many pervasive stereotypes - the poor are lazy, the poor don't take advantage of opportunities, they just don't care, and on and on But the question is what do we have left? Are we still really so numbingly innocent to think that if we just try our best we will also be at the top. NO!! We will be working for all of this elites or capitalist monsters for the rest of our lives. Maybe we could save a bit but sooner or later the pattern or cycle of a world provided for them will bite you in the neck. One of us will get sick, be in an accident of some sort and will all go back to zero and come running back to them which are unfair because this elite empowered people are unsurprisingly the minority. The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the poorest 48 nations (i.e. a quarter of the world’s countries) is less than the wealth of the world’s three richest people combined. And 20% of the population in the developed nations consumes 86% of the world’s goods and resources. This situation could also be compared to the rural places also in the Philippine provinces. In Negros Occidental, for example, over 85% of the people live below the poverty line. Most available land is devoted to sugar cane, which is not competitive on the global market and is often sold at very low price in the world market. Not to mention the wage payments which are abysmal and sharecropping is a brutal display of exploitation. Of course large “hacendero” families still own most of the lands. Land reform has obviously no hope for implementation. CHILDREN are starving to death!!!
This process actually is nothing new. As a matter of fact Globalization has been around Pinas for centuries. The famous explorer Mr. Magellan and his posse sponsored by the Spanish crew landed in Cebu, particularly Mactan for 2 main agenda. He saw our islands riches and sieze to colonize it to have easy income and easy wealth and to bless and evangelized the natives with the holy graces of Christianity with the one and only true faith of their catholic church. And the seed of present day situation was then planted. Not to mention (fast forward 3 centuries) when Admiral Dewey steamed into Manila Bay. About 80% of land in the Philippines was in the public domain. since then Filipino politicians was the one who determines how our land was to be exploited and by whom. Those few who has the right connections got the timbers and mining rights. This is our resources, Mother Nature at its best and yet the Philippine state has always encouraged the extraction of this resources. Even leasing large areas for exploitation at nominal fees and ensuring zero export taxes. Such depressive acts are done in exchange of free access or quotas in Uncle Sam’s market.
Also one example of this was x President Ramos administration, he lessen the restrictions on foreign investment by giving incentive bonanzas. Investors were given a 10-year tax holiday, capital tax exemptions and a lot more that I don’t know anymore.
The consequences of these land use policies have not been pretty. You could start by mentioning the ongoing marginalization of indigenous peoples, tremendous concentration of land ownership, and environmental degradation. The net result? Perpetuation of the semi-feudal, semi-capitalist, and neocolonial character of the Philippine economy and mass displacement of indigenous communities and upland farmers.
Then many of us end up in squatter areas.

TIGHT END ISSUE 1

I st issue of many to come I hope, a fanzine dedicated to hardcore and straight edge. I got a copy of it from the maker itself, DAN whom I met while touring Laguna. Well I must say that this is a great job. A lot of show reviews; I think it’s pretty consistent. Looks like our man right here never failed to come to a lot of shows. With interviews of my local favorite acts BYSTORM and HTB! And also with a SxE band from Boston called THE EFFORT. An article about 7’vinyls and an obvious liking for football, a good zine but I must say that I need more. I finished it in one sitting and hungry for more!! Great job bro, keep it up…looking forward for issue number 2..

Well its been a while. I’m sorry if I haven’t updated this as often as I used too. My head has been up to a lot of shit and also been quite disappointed with some stuffs.. Asawhole is supposed to be in a Euro tour and everything has been ok. The paper was done, the shows were booked and we were all set for a chance of a lifetime. The impossible had appeared it self and thinking it was ok. A year of preparation is ended by a 5 minute interview, DENIED! It sucks but life goes on. Reapplication next year! Enough of that..

The activities of the past weeks had been an overload. From the AAW Luzon tour to the Luzon people coming over. I myself could say that I was privileged to witness a lot of great bands, meet a lot of people and learn a lot of stuffs. By now I guess it safe to say that in the midst of all this shit I had been enjoying Pinas diy hardcore, at its finest!

TAKE4 HANG OVER

Davao city is back in its normal day. But still haven't gone over the show last Friday. The show was a long one. In fact it is by far the longest, as usual I dont have the show report. But I must tell you that all the visiting bands was awesome.

Staid and Bystorm blew our heads off and so did Mchc crew and Sacrifix. Thanks a lot to those bands who came. And to Bystorm and Staid , a lot of good times and good memories guys. Hope you enjoyed your stay as much as we did..

After short notices to the organizers the tour finally happened. I was stoked to know that we would be able to play with 3 productions. And everyone was so fucking great!! But as much excitement as I have, I am also nervous as shit. But the hell with it, posters up so everything is a go!!!

Day 1( Pasig Leg)

First things first, we need to fix our business first before concentrating on the shows. So we woke up as early as 530 to get dress and ready for important thing ahead. As we got there we found out that what were getting to isn’t easy but as we pushed ahead with all the drama. We got out that hell hole of an office and officially the “TOUR” begun. We went outside to get something to eat and stroll around. It was raining so hard so we decide to go back to where we stay and get some much needed rest. Afternoon I received a txt message from Mic (bystorm) and led ( xstaidx) saying we would meet them at sm mega mall at around 8. At 6 pm after a loooong preparation with Von, the journey had started. And man, Manila traffic never fails to bring out the monster in me. Then we hopped in the mrt so it was kind of fun, coz it’s the first time for Maui and Piox so we were all laughing and get pictures taken. (promdi attitude represent) we got to the said place a little later than agreed but it was fine. Then we met Mic and Led with Dangie. Finally met this guys after a lot of talking in the internet. We grabbed something to eat at Bohdhi and head of to the show. We got to Cuerdas and met a lot of old friends. Actually more than I expected, Old friends who I’ve met over the years, and it was a great time catching up. Also met Odessa, Aleg and Zepol and thanked them for setting up the show. These guys live a lot further than most of the people there so I was very thankful for the effort. The show kicked off with Just in Case ands guess what, they are from Davao. It was unexpected but a very nice surprise. After them was Rush Id and was great to finally saw them. Great set!! Actually I cant remember the line up coz I was tired as hell. But I know that Bystorm, Play and Sister Bastard played before us. All this bands was awesome , and added to my over flowing nervousness.

Then it was our set. We played a 9 song set and I think we did a pretty clean set, hopefully. I remember people singing along with us while doing a cover from trial. I was shocked to the support given to us by this people who I myself look up to in terms of communication, song writing and fucking awesome sets. And we also got to see our tour shirts courtesy of sir Dyey of Northern Territory. Awesome so thanks a lot bro!!! After us I remember seeing NXCXP which is also an old friend. KillRatio send me shivers to our spines. Thanks Dane for the IRH copy!!! Always a joy reading your stuffs. After this I went outside already to have some chat to the people who was there. Met Raymond from Feud and Staid and its always a pleasure chatting with him. I don’t know anymore who was the bands playing. I just remember going inside again to watch one of my faves of all time, BEAUTY OF DOUBT. Apparently it was their last show for this year coz Ronald is goin outside the country again. After some chat with the NCI crew and a lot of laughs with Play, plus my band mates were drunk as hell, We need to go home to Tateng( Sangkay) along with Archie (Guerra Mundial). So exhausted, so just a couple of hellos and goodnight and bang, were dead!

Day 2 (Laguna Leg)

Woke up at around 9 pm and immediately had breakfast. We were hanngin out with Tateng and his brother and preparing ourselves for the long day ahead. At noon we had lunch at a mall in recto and just walk around and looked at the punk shops there buy some stuffs. Afternoon we met up with our long friend Dha (standfast). It was great to see this girl again. A lot of chit chats, then hop in the first bus to Laguna. It was quite a long ride. Just enough time for us to catch up on things and also get some nap, im amaze that its still bright even at 6pm. We arrived at Laguna and met with my man xJayx Mihara. He immediately brought and welcomed us at his home and introduced us to his family. Some joking around and some much needed shower, we proceed to the venue. We got to Salt water at around 830. The venue was nice. A cozy place with a stage and an open air ambiance, the venue is surrounded by lakes so as I expected it was very cool. Saying our hi and hellos to our friends from Pd. I had the pleasure to hang out with these guys a year ago at Cebu, so we did a lot of catching up with Howell and the crew. We played with a lot of great bands which I don’t remember much because im really not good in remembering a lot I don’t know why.

But I remember moving around Miharas set and Piledriver. Don’t get me wrong but all of the bands were great, I also saw Unheard to name a few. We were the last band to play that night. We did a long set and was very grateful to the crowd. As they went nuts during our set, stage diving and sing along was present. We ended our set with our version of 7seconds Young till I Die and it was enough to end the night with. After the show we went to mini stop to chill out and eat some gi-normous ice cream. Hanged out with youthcrew dan who happens to be the maker of Tight End Zine, amazing sxe hc zine from Laguna. Also shared a lot of laughs with the guys from Pd, GroundZero and Eight ounce, definitely one of the funniest people we’ve met in this tour. Laughed our asses off with these guys! We went home to Jays place along with the crew and watched a couple of videos ate tons of pancit canton and called it a night!!!

Day 3 (Cavite Leg)

The next day we had lunch at Jays place amazing accommodation from his parents and wife. Just chilled out there and laughing because I accidentally fucked up Vons slipper.hehe when good time gone Bad haha. After lunch we said our farewell to Xjayx ,xkelly,Dha, Dan and beda and the rest of Laguna crew. It was kinda sad that we didn’t have that much of a time to spend with these fellows. One of the most amazing people I met in this tour. Hands down to xjay for the accommodation and friendship, One of the nicest person in this side of the planet! Thanks a lot my friend and good luck on being a father. I know you won’t have trouble being one. And to your wife xkellyx, Thanks a lot to both of you and your crew!!!After chilling out on 7/11 plus a dance number from our hardcore/dancer debonair Maui, we ride the van and bid farewell.. at the van I had a little quite time listening to Morcheeba and thinking that the last show is almost on the grasp and the experience was already amazing. We got to Cavite and we were picked up by Archie and Jamie(Phlegm thrower) and went ahead to the venue. Hen we got there we met the main organizer Mario from Guerra Mundial and Kill Ratio. This guy put a lot of efforts to put the show together so we are so stoked and gratefull for that.

At 6 the show started and friends are arriving. Flower grave Collective is one of my oldest friends. This guys are the one who takes care of me and my wife every time I go to Manila. We had all been good friends with this guys because of the same humor and of course our common denominator- WEED!!! So as I met the waray crew especially my pal Ekwa from Eyes of fire, the session begun. Its always a joy hanging out with his guys.Miong and Yan and Marcore never fails to make me laugh as loud. I was having a damn good time and enjoying the bands as well. Amazing set from Censorshit was the first thing I could remember. Also a great stoner band Tsympayne was enough to make me baked as shit. I remember EOT played before us. now on our set. We agreed on playing all of our songs but unfortunately me and my band mates were stoned as hell. Fuck!! And we already forgot some of the titles of our songs but I know its not bad set but damn, Too much weed!! But still the crowd had a lot of fun. I was even surprised when the Flower grave threw confetti and sprayed fake snows and stuffs on us on the first song. PARTEY!!! So fucking great time. After us I remember seeing bands like Guerra Mundial, Eyes of Fire, Vex and all of them are AMAZING!!! Long time I haven’t been in a show like this and was having a time of my life just chlling out, sitting and watching. At 1 pm we went back to Mario’s place hanged out with flower grave friends and slept like a baby… thanks a lot to FlowerGrave. Also to Archie, I dint have much chance to tell you how gratefull we are for taking care of our band and my wife. I lab you bro!!!ehehe
Enough said. The last show was a blast!!!!!

So now is day 4 and the band tour is officially over. But that doesn’t mean our party is over. The next day Jammy brought us to Tagaytay., Amazing place and amazing ride with amazing people. While on the road it got me thinking how great to tour and meet a lot of people. Even Pio told me that what could we have been doing good to deserve such a great accommodation and friendship from people who also amazes us at the same time. We share disame passion that’s it!! We got to jAmmys grandmas house and ate the best tinola ive ever tasted in my life, chill plus good food and just relaxed. The next day had again sinigang and went to tagaytay and ate some mushroom burger. After at night went to mall of asia and went ice skating. We all looked like fools but who cares it was a great time. Mario in Ice skates is a sight to see. Unfortunately we had a little accident with Jammy after trying to follow a girl. He bumped his head badly but fortunately his ok!! Hehe later we said goodbye to jammy and Mario. I remember the last time I was here I told Myong that Mario scares the bajesus out of me. And who wouldn’t be, the dreads, the big fellow with tattoos but its all wrong. This guy was so nice. Also the kindest!! I cant believe that there are still a lot of people who are as nice as him even thou he looks like the guy who could kill you in one attempt!! Joking!!! so the farewell was said and went to the farewell party organized by flowergrave smoke a lot and went home to japs place. The next day we went to recto to meet up with dyey. Thank you sir for the support!!! That night was spent with Dha and Sannee (crapsalad videos) at Vons cousins place. We just relaxed and head to the airport the next day. At the airport Maui was questioned if he has sore eyes because his eyes was so fucking RED , if you know what I mean… that how we said goodbye to Luzon and the Someslowallgo tour was over and a success!!!!

It's amazing how you meet people and become good friend with them when you barely see them or never seen them for that matter.. Conclusion of the tour, Yes there is friendship in a complete stranger. Lets all enjoy!!! Hardcore, good friends good times!!!

well the week turned out to be quite dissapointing. The proposed planned feeding did not happened due to the heavy rains that had been with us lately. But rest assured that within this week, were going to have our feeding again. faces of disapointment

I’m quite excited in the tour on manila. We would be playing shows there and be playing with a lot of great bands. The schedule and poster would be up soon but we definitely be playing in Manila, Laguna and maybe Cavite. But for sure this would be one fun experience.

Well i'm finally back. For those who didn't know i was hospitalized and had an operation. My f*ng intestines got twisted. And boy was i f*cked.But its over now and im now in a stage of recovering. The weekend was a blast althou i could barely walk. The feeding was great and we had a great time. im pretty sure the kids enjoyed the Ratatouille, Pancit and rice we prepared. did like a hundred meals and off we go. Anis from Singapore and Ali from Malaysia visited Davao to participate in the event. Thanks guys!!!! After the feeding was a show and it tuned out great as expected. With our lokal Hc Acts , who never failed to bring the house down... Sorry but Mr sicko cant make a show review !!! thanks to everyone who participated and did their part!!!!

Over all, an awesome day and a day to remember!!!

Yesterday, Sunday to be precise was spent with the expected family day. Yeah, anybody who has one knows the drill knows what im talking about, Its good food, quality time and no showers, and of course the inevitable movie marathon. After watching an agonizing marathon of Dr Do little with my kid I got to see one guy I like. No, definitely not Eddie Murphy! Instead I saw Paul Giammatti which leads me to my little note today about one of my favourite movie AMERICAN SPLENDOR

If anyone of you don’t know and gives a shit, American Splendor is a 2003 biopic about the amazing and somewhat weird Harvey Pekar, an author of a comic book series American Splendor. Yes! The film an adaptation of the comics, which dramatize Pekar's day to day life. It was written and directed by documentarians Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, but still shares credit to Pekar and his wife, Joyce Brabner. As I said Paul Giamatti takes the role of Pekar. You might have seen him in a lot of big films and im a fan of his acting although he also takes a lot of stupid roles like the movie he did that lead me to this article. Anyway enough of that, this film even actually has appearances from Pekar and Brabner themselves (along with Toby Radloff, a border line autistic dude who became an “Mtv” vj . guess then need to market on nerds was at its peak that year)., who discuss their lives, the comic books, and how it feels to be depicted onscreen by actors.

“-Can't explain it but America seems to be fixated on watching other people's life. be it the MTV smash "Real World" or the video game "the Sims" and now comic books. Pretty soon someone will release a CD featuring the sounds they make as they move on with their everyday life.”

The story goes about Pekar who is an everyday anti social man whose life has been turned into a comic. he is a very careful man, works the same job day in day out, and is happy with any girl that he gets be it she's his type or not. He is not happy with his body and face and refers to it as a reliable disappointment. The movie kicks of with his 2nd wife leaving our man Pekar, he has lost his voice and has a very healthy obsession with jazz records. Can’t blame him. He meets a man at a yard sale who he later on convinces to publish his comic book. He agrees and the comic becomes a smash. He becomes an instant celebrity in his own right and meets his 3rd wife through that process. He appears on Dave Letterman and has merchandise from his comic. And gave him a hard time! You just got to see it. The movie is told with great visual style where sometimes we see the real Pekar next to Giamatti and sometimes we see it as a comic strip.

Anyway watch it and see for your self. I don’t know if you’re from other places, Pero chuy if you’re from Davao City you could rent it in some movie rental shops, preferably the old ones. And if it’s for sale then much better. Or you could even rent it and not return it if the place is closing anyway. it would just go to places were it aint worth shit. Just don’t tell them I told you that!! Enjoy!!!!

THE STORY SO FAR

Hey Everyone, Again it’s been days since I updated these well things had been a little rough but it’s ok. Good news to those who are interested. Finally ASAWHOLE will be in the studio. We would be recording around 10 to 11 songs to release a cd. Hopefully things work out. It’s about time. Nothing much this past few days just a lot of writing Lyrics and stuffs, and I got an interview from Gran Peligro zine so watch out for it. Ive been trying to do zines and inties and I could say that KJ is doing a great job. Support it ayt? On July 4 there would be a show, but due to maybe the lack of interest of the prospected venue to our proposal , we would again try to find a place tomorrow or the next for the final venue. but surely this week the final place would be done don’t worry. For the mean time, try to check out the line up for the show with this teaser.
We got friends from OVC family that would be visiting us.Plus some bands From Malaybalay Bukidnon!!!

Why the fuck do I love d.i.y? Coz I could do things I want. I could be in a band even thou I don’t really know how to sing a note. When I was little I remembered liking books so much and dreamed of being a writer, as I grew up I recognize that I can’t be 1, why? Coz they said you need a degree to write, and aside from being lazy I was broke and can’t afford to go to college. Yep boohoo, if you’re thinking middle class suburban HC kid who could buy anything they want, I am not one of them!! I’m one of them dudes whose lucky to have a good meal for the day and at least buy a tape in a month. So I was always kinda frustrated till I met hardcore and punk and find out I could do what I want and who gives a flying f*ck. I remember the feeling of listening to first punk rock records but I could never forget the feeling I got the when I read my first fanzine. It was like a push button opened my brain to a whole new world of expression, freedom, and reality and of course hardcore!

But enough about music, as I always say I love music so much more than anything. I have my soundtrack of every scene in the story of my life. But writing about it is not really my talent. I respect music so much that I don’t want to, by any chance ruin it from time to time. Just the occasional “love this record listen to it” but it doesn’t go further than that. Anyway back to what I was talking about, I always dreamed of being able to write and talk about things a like, which is pretty much what im doing right now. But my biggest dream was a Centre where we could do great things and do things we wished other people would do to us. Which are a centre maybe for free basic education like writing, reading and art, and a space for people who wants to read books and literature that is not from the didactic eyes of school and society.

I had spark to move it with the inspiration given to me by my better half. So we move from one city to another, I remember collecting books, reading materials from friends and other donations. And even stealing some from bookstores, which we got away obviously, this dates June something when we got back to Davao and literally started to make our library!! As we all know im from a shitty hardcore band called ASAWHOLE , same people in the band are the once working with me so we decided to call it the same name, giving it a unity and ONE vibe. So we had book activities and Saturday classes and twice a month feeding projects. I remember doing a lot of things which surely heart was warming. Unfortunately our dreams of utopian love(haha) was put to rest due to some tragic experiences which lead to the downfall of the shop with regards to sustainability. Anyway enough of this crap. I don’t want you guys to remember it in a bad way.

Now Cot Crew is getting stronger than ever and I am so proud of this family! Saydees kitchen is getting better and the bands and shows are obvious progress. Our next COT library is at work and would be starting again in no time. But as of now lets support Cot activities coz we’ve got a lot coming this months so move up!!!

A YEAR OLD PILEDRIVER INTERVIEW

If you guys don’t know, I was doing Down And Out as a zine. I released an issue of it with 40 pages. The issue contained interviews with the now defunct Feud, Mihara and Queen City Crew and some articles. Not I have a hard time conituneing it because maybe of luck of time and money. But still when the time is right ill release another issue of it. A year ago I was given a chance to interview one of the best bands representing the Laguna hardcore scene. I’m talking about PILEDRIVER mother f”kcer!!! It’s a shame that I couldn’t release this so I decided to put this here.

This was before they Treb left the band, and for those who still doesnt know they are now ripping it with their new front man Carlo Boy from old Legendary Cebu bands Mea Culpa and Maximum Tolerance.now they ar in the studio finishing their new record SouthSide Kings under Railroad and One Voice Records. 1. First and foremost, how’s life treating you guys? What have you been up to these past few days?

Howell – being alive is such a sweet thing. Its all great and well with us here. Thanx for asking bro. We are busy preparing for the HONGKONG’S HARDEST SHOW. This will be a blast!

Johner - life has been great to us. We have our own respective things go in on that actually fuel the drive that we need to do the shows and be able to finance the band. Its been awesome to play a lot of shows and the most glorious thing would be that we overcame some of the major roadblocks the prevented us from going to tour and record our stuff.

2. Could you tell us little something on how PILEDRIVER was born?

Reggie - PD IS JUST A SIDE BAND...BLAH BLAH BLAH...

Howell – Yeah, PD was just a sideband before from the guys of Children of the damned and Homecide who loved to play Madball covers. It all started over there.. a very tragic incident happened in 1999 while we are skating we became a victim of a drive-by shooting and Gerrymar Yap (Children of the damned / Piledriver guitarist) was hit badly and he didn’t make it. That was the saddest day in my life, loosing a friend in a very non-sense way was so hard to accept. 2 bands was left by Gerrymar Yap, around year 2000 Treb gave me a call he wanted to continue Piledriver full time and he asked me if I’m cool with the idea, I said “let’s give it a try” and the rest was history..

Johner - as you all know the band is a living tribute to former guitarist, Gerrymar yap who was stolen to us by a senseless violent killing spree. On my part, I joined the crew on 2003 and the crew was already an established outfit by that time. they just needed a little nudge coming from a dedicated guitar player ... ahem* ahem* ahem* but seriously, those days were more of the carefree days of the group to a point they managed to not really delve in to making the unit into a fervored hardcore band. I got in and made it much more "steadier"

3. I know that you may have a lot of influences musically but could you tell us some?

Howell – Biofeedback and Tame The Tikbalang was the bands that really get me into hardcore. From the first time I saw them live I said to myself this is where I want to be and be involved with. Then I start listen to Sick of it all, Madball, Agnostic Front, IGNITE, H20, and tons of other New York Hardcore bands.

Johner - on a nostalgic standpoint, I listened to a lot of the alternative rock stuff and grunge in HighSkool until I came across 90's crossover stuff like cromags, leeway, SOD and the like which gradually introduced me to both sides of the opposite spectrum of crossover's roots, namely hardcore and metal. I actually admit to have the same fundamental metal roots spewed by bands like Death, Carcass, At the Gates and the melodic metal fold and the like. However, the common ground for us is we all love listening to the tunes of Agnostic Front, SOIA and Madball, which is the main vein that was struck.

Reggie - NEW YORK HARDCORE MOSTLY...

4. The STA ROSA CD was a success bro; I mean lot of people I know had really put it in their daily play list. How was it? Would you consider it a successful one?

Howell – yeah bro! I can’t explain the feeling when kids know all the words of our songs and they get crazy with our set in every city we tour, giving back the energy we need in every shows. Bro that is enough for me, and plus seeing you guys singalong with us in Cebu I can really say that the Santa Rosa City CD reached far as expected..

Johner - yup, I consider it a success cuz we where able to finally put out our own cd through our own efforts, the main deal with it being a success is that most people (even those outside the scene) know the words to the songs in the album. that is success right off the bat for me. it such a flattering thing to have your material wanted, despite the locality of the area be it as far north or down south.

Reggie - I THINK SO...MANY OF OUR LOCAL KIDS...KNOWS THE LYRIKS...AND WE THANK THEM FOR THE SUPPORT.

5. Lots of your songs are about reality and what in actual fact happens around, what do you think is the reason behind it? And should we be expecting the same type of topics on the next PILEDRIVER offering?

Howell – Since day one PD is all about everyday street life reality. It really reflects in our lyrics, straight to the point no bullshit kind of delivery. Yes, expect the same thing but we will give some twist to it lyrically and musically in the next PD CD.

Reggie - PILEDRIVER IS ALL ABOUT REALITY..HOW WE SEE IT...AND EVERYDAY LIFE

Johner - because we are not a sugar coating band that will be cryptic ... we never have been a band that will beat the cr@p out the bush before making our point. we attack the point directly to convey that message. yup, as far as I know, treb's gonna do a more straight forward lyrical style with the next album

6. You guys had been around for quite sometime, and I know you notice that HARDCORE is getting bigger. How do you feel about it?

Johner - we are proud that the scene is becoming bigger and we appreciate all our friends who also helped us and kept the scene alive despite its short period of being stagnant at a point. we are just scratching the surface of possibilities for us and we are no longer just local, we are now at reach with our ASEAN brothers in the scene to make HARDCORE a global threat! so if you are a hardcore kid, its time to raise our fists and shout that OUR TIME IS NOW!

Reggie - HAPPY...BUT SOME KIDS DOESNT REALLY KNOW WHAT HARDCORE IS ALL ABOUT...

Howell – Its great to see the Hardcore scene here in the Philippines growing steadily. But you know in every progress you make there will always be a sort of problems that you will encounter. But I guess its already given, I think all we need to do is help and respect each other well. This is our TIME!

7. I know that you had toured already a lot. Where do you think is the best? Any funny stories?

Johner - Cebu would be forever be on top our list cuz it’s our second home. there is no "best" scene nor venues nor places, it would be always the BEST OF FRIENDS and Blood Brothas that will account if your playing a sh!tty gig or the grandest event ever. funny story? I think this would count, I always get my money's worth by crapping my pants off to get even with the terminal fee and travel taxes at airports. ha* ha* ha*

Reggie - EVERY TRIP IS SPECIAL FOR THE BAND...AND EVERYTIME...FUNNY THINGS HAPPEN

Howell –Every place we go is best for me but Cebu is the best place ever! Cause every time we play there is like playing a local show here in Santa Rosa. Hello.. I haven’t updated this blog for some days, I had problem with my connection but luckily I got it back the other day and now im back on track, Too busy with a lot of things. Heres some books that I like that had helped me past time. Some good reads maybe you’re interested. If not well sorry its my zine anyway. Kidding!!

A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING

For the first time, my aunt gave me a book that I actually liked! This is a science book, but don’t worry, its not textbook boring. Its in fact a fun book coz the author actually has humour. Bill Bryson describes graphically and in simple terms the size of the universe, and that of atoms and subatomic particles. He then explores the history of geology and biology, and traces life from its first appearance to today's modern humans, placing emphasis on the development of the modern Homo sapiens. Furthermore, he discusses the possibility of the Earth being struck by a meteor! Yeah its kinda nerdy but believe me its good! Borrow my copy and read it! A fun way of knowing about the evolution of human, the real one!

NICO SONGS THEY DONT PLAY ON THE RADIO

Technically this is not really my book, It’s my wife’s. I wasn’t really a big fan of Velvet Underground but I could admit that this band in the long run caught my ears and could sing along from some song to the others. This is a biography of the woman who fronted Velvet Underground and considered to be one of the most influential minimalist artist of their time NICO, Or maybe until now. She’s first and foremost a junkie, As soon as she gets a video player, she watches endless cut-ups of open heart surgery and Apocalypse Now. She knows no jokes. While reading this you would immediately recognize James Young’s (the author) fondness of her. He was travleing with her so he has this day to day familiarity. Besides the highly noticeable lyrical disaster, this book is often hilarious. I love the idea of reading a book or account about a infamous and almost unheard band and their unheard tours. Drug tragedies, song and tour disasters and a lot of mishaps, which results to this funny and great piece of literature. It’s not as positive as it is more cynical this is a great little anti-tribute to a fascinating and compared to the Barbie doll inspired women of today, a more human icon of doom!! Two thumbs up!!!

URBAN RECORDINGS

Got this from friends from Zurich, this book is done by Ingo Giezendanner alias GRRRR. Its as simple as this, he illustrates all the urban spaces he goes to and doesn’t write about it . Instead he draws it by simply using a pen and a paper. All illustrations of places from Zurich via Nairobi, New York and Karachi to Cairo and New Orleans an even Manila, a unique approach to visualise the vision and feel of the artist/author, It contains drawings from the years 1998 to 2006 which provide insight into Giezendanner's entire work and places. Awarded Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2006, amazing!!!

STICK THIS IN YOUR MEMORY HOLE

A friend from Australia gave this to me and took some time before having the chance to read it. I was a bit worried because it concentrates on Australian politics which I don’t have any clue about. But I was proved wrong. It’s a book of critic and the best part is I love the authors foul mouthed approach on everything this guy dislikes. Which relates not only to the aussies but through out the world that’s surrounded by issues of politics, environment, social and cultural issues and the very fabric of our society. I love it if books are made simple in terms of words and add up the criticisms and the curses, makes it more honest and more human. I hate books that are made only for the reading capabilities of people with eye glasses.hehe good work by the author Tristan Clark.
Brings out indignation and laughter!!

EVASION

Well who’s a punk rocker who doesn’t have this book. It’s a must have!!! (punk rock 101) kidding. I read that this was from a zine to a book published by CrimethInc workers collective. Is referred to elsewhere as "Mac", "the Evasion Kid", or "Mac Evasion." He later wrote a column in the zine heartattaCk and has been identified as "Nigel Davis" in one bibliography.
Evasion catalogs the travels and exploits of a straight-edge vegan young man who decided to not get a job or go to school after high school, despite his parents' wishes. Deciding that his life, freedom, and time were too valuable to be wasted working in a job he would despise, to build profits for a company, he stepped outside of the confines of a traditional role in society.

Hitching rides, hopping trains, dumpster diving, squatting, shoplifting, contriving receipt scams, the narrator defines for himself what life should be about,in his quest to never ever work again. How I wish this is possible in my country where you have to work just to have the money to buy the rice that you need.. boohoo. You could criticize me all you want if you’re the anarcho punk of the year.,Just saying my opinion, peace. But over all one of my favourite books.

Sunday is the day! And today, got nothing to do but enjoy the comforts of home. Heres something ive been enjoying this week.

24 Hour Party People (movie)

I was at a jeep when I was talking to Sam of Vampire State about old brit pop music with the likes of course of The Smiths and Joy Division etc , when he told me about this movie and told that he could give to me his copy. Thanks bro!!

This is a good take about the amazing party scene in Manchester England- circa 1979-1992. its about Tony Wilson and the bands behind the scene. Narrated by Tony Wilson its self which is played great by Steve Coogan, the narration is cool coz its an unconventional style of talking straight to the audience which makes it easier better and far more cooler. Coz I think its kinda hard to explain whats happening from one moment to another considering the time being,It has an in your face style that I love.
It helps if you know something about some of the bands shown in the film (Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays) or if you at least have an interest in learning about them. Of course its fun to watch also has its comedic approach on party scenes fuelled by sex, drugs and not so manly new wave music. hehe
Even though it’s a film of a rise and fall of an empire which I don’t really give a flying f*ck about, it pays a good eulogy and tribute to the amazing Ian Curtis (lead singer of Joy Division who hung himself in 1985)
Don’t worry this is not your typical tragic, drug withdrawal movie that only interests in its dark and twisted tail to moralize and entertain( f*ck off).

Fast paced, extremely witty and fun!!!

Highly recommended….

I finally got a copy of this book made by a long time good friend. I heard about it and couldn’t find a copy of it in Davao, I think they run out or something. For quite sometime ive been a big fan of Klitorika’s blog. one of the most provocative, crazy and intelligent writers of our time. These book talks about sexuality, femininity and morality, fun and hot way of learning about women, what they go to what they feel and what they want!

Mind blowing, coming from a woman who is trapped in the doors of modern religious 3rd world box…

Kaktus Karuka Demo cd

I got this from Odessa (tenchu) and sure is happy to get one. Consisted of people from the great but now defunct ChokeCocoi.
This one is treasure in a making. Fast thrash non-stop all over the record from 1st to last. The quality is a bit “raw” but not a problem. Nice and simple diy packaging. Over all a great record!!! Looking forward for more!!

Just got back from Cebu and had a blast. It was nice to see old friends and meet new ones and of course see lots of great bands. I decided to travel alone having the reason of no one wants to come with me (kaluoy) and I miss going out alone. For some strange reason I just turned 25 and in serious pursuit of fun and some alone time.
So here is the plan, No airplanes. Let’s take this on the road! So I took the bus from Davao to Cagayan De Oro and take a boat ride from Mindanao to Cebu. Cool eh, but not that easy. I just found out that the f*ing road at Bukidnon is under construction and it gave me a whooping 9 hours instead of the usual 6, imagine! But as I arrive at Cagayan de Oro it was then ok. Met up with my dad for a quick bite and hop on the first boat to leave, I stayed up for a while and feel the cool air from the ocean which by far is the only fresh air I got for the whole day. Tried to get some sleep after a while and get ready for the next day. As I arrived at Cebu Astroboy met up with me in the morning and immediately went down to business and smoked some good old sweet Cebu delicacies. Hahaha We basically spent the day at Astro’s place which is an hour bus ride from Cebu. Spent the day eating freshly baked cake c/o Lani ( salamat Lan ha) by far one of the best cakes I tasted. I saw my godson jcube and man could he be bigger. The kid is huge and so cute. Love that kid so much! Spent the afternoon at the beach and left for Cebu city. As usual arriving at Cebu is greeted with a warm welcome from Sra crew. I couldn’t ask for more, this people are one of the coolest, humble and kindest people in the planet. Was also surprise to meet some friends from Pagbilao and later on PLAY had arrived and chilled out and got ready for the day ahead. And P.S I got to taste that siomai ( dimsum) that Gray (NO!) has been bragging about. Got to taste it its really good, with a cool and simple spicy sauce that compliments the food very well. Plus its only 6 bux a piece, dirt cheap! Follow it up with some puso (dili heart ha!)it’s a rice cooked and wrap inside a leaf which until now I cant figure out if its banana or coconut. Basta! Its tastes good and again its cheap. Only 2 bux a piece I guess. Just enough to put me to a good sleep at casa ni Dexter yawa!!

The moment has finally arrive and the show was on. The show is held at this nice small place. It’s a convenience store with just enough space to accommodate the chaos that is yet to arrive. The show was scheduled at 4 pm but due to the late arrival of the bands, the show started at around 7.
I must tell you in advance that this is not a show review! So don’t expect me to elaborate on all the bands that played coz im really not good at that and before the show had started the heat was killing me so I didn’t got to see all the bands. Sorry!!! So these are the few bands that I got to remember.

I saw tiger pussy play. Dancing galore all over the place! I was an instant fan. Jan Sundays voice reminds me of Bikini Kill’s great set.
I also got to saw this new band Crooked which plays youthcrewish stuff ala Champion and HH. Plays well and looking forward for more from these guys.
I remember seeing Guilt to Flow also and did not disappoint. Later on I guess after a couple of bands it was Midday’s turn.
A female fronted metalcore band. Great vocals, and the metal parts are highly noticeable. If I was not mistaken it was the last song when they had Cari from Queen City Crew and Mitch from Substance 32 to join them and do some guest vocals. Great set! Up next was Vampire State, and as expected they were awesome. Swedish crustcore if im not mistaken, Very fast and very aggressive, enough to make me start to stand up on my feet and move. Kudos to Sam. Nice set and nice songs, just as I expected!
it was time for the Bulacan thrash titans to take over. Play time for PLAY , as expected they gave us 1 of the best sets of the night. Circle pit all over the territory. They played I think almost all of their songs and did not fail. How could you go wrong with their songs Set Aside and ALL. With a lot of new ones, sing alongs and stage dives (w/o the stage!) Man could this band be any faster! The set alone proved that my trip was f*ing worth it!

After their set was NO! one of my favourites in Cebu. Playing fast old school hardcore punk, reminds me so much of the good old Fast Times. Just quite disappointed because of the very short set, you could have played more songs! But still the short set was great and awesome, fast as fuck!!!!

At this moment the need for fresh air and ventilation is at its peak so I decide to go out. Im sure that there was a lot of great bands who played next like Toxic Orgasm and Boundary and more, too sad I missed your set but me got exhausted! Hehe

I went back inside to see Queen City Crews set. As likely, they tear the place apart. Sing alongs, circle pit and pile ons were inevitable. I don’t remember anymore what happened just that I was getting worked up and getting the mic! Giving us a flavour of old school style NYHcish stuffs, great set from this great people!

Gardo was next to end the night giving us their usual dose of beat down in your face hardcore. Perfect finale for a great night!!!

We basically spent the next day hanging out at the beach and find out na meron palang Red Horse sa ilalim ng dagat? Right Eng? Hehe

Spent my last day on Cebu buying stuffs that I need and left at night carrying with me lots of memories of fun and good times!
HARDCORE, GOOD FRIENDS ,GOODTIMES!!

Monday night, took the last boat home and bid goodbye!!

Just recently this band went to play at Manila and man did I feel so sad of not being able to go, But still happy to know that they are willing to cross oceans just to play for people at the other side of the planet.

As growing up I cease to look around what my generation had given me.
I grew up in an old house hold, growing up with my grandmother. Being a kid i was more likely to be the observant. I saw a generation of hatred. I saw a generation of angst and boy did i love it! As a kid i always hang out with the older guys, i loved the music the fight and the rebellion. I know they are just TV watching, trendy ass bozos trying to be hip. BUT THATS IT! The mainstream society before was more aggressive. And that’s the culture that the youth or the younger and even the older ones could at least have. Why create a new circle when you would still have to do the same thing which eventually leads you to the same path your “titas" took. I know its funny but culture had driven us so far that it eventually came backwards.
Its dumber and weaker! And it’s your generation!

When you look around you see this deranged parade of people all in uniforms. Unnoticing looking disame but the worst part is they are all pretending to be different, strange and unique. And there come the famous infatuation of depression. What the fuck is your problem? There’s enough problems in the world than dealing with the problems that was obviously taken from your favorite soap opera, but this time with a little twist and distortion.

It’s the difference of culture that derives us to be weak. And being weak means its easier for us to be fragile, and if your fragile everything falls apart and so as our everything. Rebellion would be forgotten which in my own perspective is the realest and most vital thing to do. It’s driven with compassion and hatred that lead us to changes in our society/ nation. As long as there is air to be inhaled and humans that go on living, there will be greed and there will be an oppressor and there will be fighting. Fighting either with the system or your daily lives.

Bad things happen around us that we could barely notice it. From birth to growth and from waking up to sleeping. The job, the school the money. religion its all tagging along to bring you in a certain way that benefits only to some. In a community we find home together with our friends who thinks like us, live like us. And by that collectivity we did a very radical thing that people this day’s doesn’t have anymore. As they say it’s a dog eat dog world, I don’t know about you but me its not yet over. Reviving the world is not yet over if you make your own world. Degenerated ideas of the majority don’t mean shit if you live your own world with your own people. Implementation of this might be hard but dedication would unnoticingly lead you to where you want to go.

Why follow unnecessary rules if you have your own. I’m not saying forget everything this World had thought you but get some things there that is applicable for you or what suits you. Imagine the power of being a big one. And by that power we could absorb and do what we want and at the same time reject everything we don’t. Look around the world and tell me if there still something in this world that is not owned. A few years from now we will all be paying for the air that we breathe? The moment we are born our brains are fed with information from other means of communication which doesn’t exist anymore if you ask me, communication based mediums are more likely to be amusement nowadays.
People treat this normal. It’s a mindset that surprisingly bring us forth to the pattern of an avid follower, good citizen, voters so don’t you fucking tell me that you are an individual. Brains are too precious and should be used. Don’t blow up the world chuy, but at least question everything that you are getting in to. Doubt is a narrative that we are entitled to have. Where will it lead you? I don’t know but you have your individuality and its your purpose. I’m scared of the time when we are all programmed to feel sufferings and dwell on it to keep us blind sighted to what is happening in the lives of people down there. Use all sorts of mediums and crafts, but for you and your love ones. Not for them! Go to your friends and do something, start something.

LIVE LIFE THINKING, LIVE LIFE KNOWING AND LIVE LIFE LOVING!

BRIDGING THE GAP

Chad invited Cot crew to play at a show in Panabo, an hour drive from Davao City. So the whole crew went there. As we arrived I notice the thin number of people around. But still the party went on.

First to kick off the night was SOMETHING TO PROVE. Playing their anticipated flavour of youth crew influence hardcore ala SHUTDOWN, So it’s a pretty good warm up to get the crowd on their feet. But sadly we noticed that the instruments are getting kind of sub-standard but still the party went on. Finishing the set with United, a cover from Shutdown.

Next band was the furious ROUNDHEAD who played with only one vocal. Sadly ID was not around for some reason ( pisot hehe) but SAK played a good part in filling up for the Dunk hobbit ‘s absence. This time as expected, the crowd started to go ape shit hearing their songs. Whats funny was that due to the said instruments they have to cut their set in to 2. but still they ripped and shred just like what Roundhead always does.

Next band is an old school crust band EMANCIPATOR who played crust core music in the veins of Resist, Doom and Discharge. This band as we all know has been around for how many years and it’s nice to see them play. Playing their original compositions and a cover from Detestation.

DIVULGE was up next from Tagum City. Female fronted hc punk band that definitely is good. Was definitely shock to see them play so well , Very aggressive and straight forward ala Kylesa. I’m an instant fan!!!

Next was ASAWHOLE and started our set with a new song. Pretty happy with the crowd who were singing along and moshing around although it’s a bit less compared to the crowd that Davao is used to. But still had fun having our friends around, what more could you ask for ryt? We played I guess 6 songs and was happy to do so…

It was CLOBEERIN TIME’s turn and did not disappoint! Now here is a twist, at this point the other guitar was already dead and done for the night and the mics was fucked up and they have to borrow a drummer to fill in to Xyrils absence. One guitar instead of two, and 1 mic instead of 3, the odds seem to be against them but turns out that it was the best set of the night!! The 3 mcs was passing the mic around and the people were helping them to sing everything. While everybody was being crazy I found Mor2 (luke dog) CT’s guitar 2 , singing along and decided to be one of the mcs of the night. “24 HOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK, CLOBEERIN TIME MARIJUANA ADDICT!!” and that made us ignore the fucked ups and had a good old party , COT style!!

Last band to end the show was ANXIETY TO HYSTERIA. Giving us a dose of their heavy , dark and pounding hardcore music. Buried Alive and Die my Will influenced flavour.
Justenough to close the night and tell us that it was a great night anyhow and the night was done!!

2 feedings and a show

Yo!! Just an update about what happened these past few weeks... Saydee’s kitchen is getting more active than ever!! 2 feedings and a show!

For those of you who don’t know, Cot Family has a feeding project called Saydee’s kitchen. It’s an effort to give free foods to less fortunate kids in the streets. We are aiming to do this at least once a month and lately its been nothing but great fun.

Cot crew gathers on Fridays to collect veggies from our kind friends from the Bankerohan market ( salamat te) . You’ll be shock how much veggies we get, then cook it the next day. Having at least 100 t0 150 meals per feeding with great vegan dishes courtesy of the crew and help from the Davao City Iskcon crew and we hit the streets with a sack of good meals and a happy smile to make it better. So next feeding would be on may 16 so if your interested to help you are more than welcome!!!

THE DEFENDER( STANDING YOUR GROUND)

So we pretty much celebrated the month of April with a show!! As usual its been a whole lotta fun with Davao City’s finest hc punk bands. I couldn’t really remember the flow of the show, but to remember it good it was the launching of 2 new bands. IRON WILL which plays heavy hardcore stuffs in the veins of HATEBREED and
BURIED ALIVE to name a few. Consisted of five guys from the same circle of friend here in DC. It features 2 guys on the mic and one of them is Sak from Roundhead so you know what he brings in the table. I think they don’t have any myspace to reach them yet but ill keep you posted. Watch out!!

Encounter is the other band that also debuted that night and did not fail to amaze the people. Giving us old thrash flavours mixed with nyhcish style. Hope to hear more from this guys. Omsisted of people from Something to prove.

The show went on with the usual line up and the usual atmosphere. No hassles and no crap. All in all just another fun night straight from Davao city !!

Tonight is a panabo show so im excited!! Till next time!!!!
